The Ladies of Charity was born out of a spontaneous outpouring of charity in response to the needs of a local family in Lyon, France in 1617. St. Vincent De Paul, noting this overwhelming generosity from the women of his parish, sought to replicate this on a more permanent basis. As the organization grew and spread to other parishes, he obtained the assistance of St. Louise de Marillac to oversee its operations and spiritual direction.

The Ladies of Charity in the NY Archdiocese was founded in March1902 with the convening of the Conference of Ladies Engaged in Catholic Charities. Throughout its 114-year history the LOC has served thousands of poor and marginalized throughout the NY Archdiocese. Today it continues to fulfill its mission of Catholic women providing comfort, support and solace to those in need.
